Apple Patents Oxygen…

by on May.19, 2010, under Life, Technology

…is what usual apple’s patents can be summed up with. I’m not a fan of apple’s patenting. They seem to deliberately patent such abstract concepts that I’m constantly expecting to see them try to patent love or happiness. Or maybe they’ve tried already?

Let’s face it, most (if not all) of their patents are so obscure, abstract or generic ideas they could try and sue everybody with a non-apple computer… “Object-Oriented Graphic System” for example, or in layman’s terms: Icons. You know, those things most Linux and Windows users have on their desktops? -,,,-

The only chance we have is to just hope that some sanity still exists in the world, and these patents stand no chance of holding up in court….yeah, we’re all doomed.

I know I’m not new in these misgivings, just another voice-drop in the ocean really. A somewhat hypocritical voice-drop since I kinda want a new iPod after my old one’s hard-drive decided it hated me and died. If you have more than 32GB of music you have limited choices when it comes to almost-affordable Portable Media Players.

Rants aside, let’s see what they’ve patented now:

Another iPatentSource

…okay, so it looks more complicated than Icons, but still on a technical level it is quite vague. It appears to be a system for holographic displays without the need for those hilariously hideous 3D glasses, but it’s basically nothing more than a flowchart. Okay, so the rambling isn’t quite over.

Still, from a tech-junkies point of view, it’s an interest concept (to say the least), and a part of me is looking forward to seeing what, if anything, comes of this.

That is, unless Apple patent a system for sending images composed of photons of light bouncing off objects in the world straight to the human brain first, and then sue everybody using this system without their consent…Perhaps they’ll call it the iSight?

Robot Marries Couple in Japan

by on May.18, 2010, under Life, Technology

Personally I think it is very sweet. Marriages are composed of two elements: Emotional and Legal. The legal element is the signing of a government-recognised contract, and the emotional element is simply happiness. If you get that from a priest telling you to kiss, fine, good for you. If you get that from simply signing the contract in front of friends and family, people you care about, that’s great too.

If this couple got the most happiness from this robot, well that’s incredibly romantic and I wish them all the future happiness in the world. Some people apparently feel uncomfortable about the idea of a robot marrying too people, and I will admit I did feel uncomfortable when I watched that video. But it was not the robot that made me uncomfortable: I was watching a wedding take place. A wedding is an inherently personal and beautiful moment, and this wedding is between between two people I do not know…It felt like I was intruding.

Humble Indie Bundle

by on May.10, 2010, under Life, Technology, Video Games

One day and a bit left on the Humble Indie Bundle, I’m doing my bit for charity and recommended it to all who find this page. They explain the concept better than me:

The Humble Indie Bundle is a unique kind of bundle that we are trying out.

Pay what you want. If you bought these five games separately, it would cost around $80 but we’re letting you set the price!

All of the games work great on Mac, Windows, and Linux. We didn’t want to leave anyone out.

There is no middle-man. You can rest assured that 100% of your purchase goes directly to the developers and non-profits as you specify (minus credit card fees).

We don’t use DRM. When you buy these games, they are yours. Feel free to play them without an internet connection, back them up, and install them on all of your Macs and PCs freely.

Your contribution supports the amazing Child’s Play charity and Electronic Frontier Foundation. By default, the amount is split equally between the seven participants (including Child’s Play and EFF), but you can tweak the split any way you’d like.

And now, thanks to a humble donation from Amanita Design: all contributors are given a free copy of Samorost 2!

So yeah, go down there and get it, now. Do your part for charity and indie games at the same time. Why are you still reading?

It’s me alone who you can trust in this whole tomb thing
I am your daddy guy.
I who spank you, whip you, flay you, beat you,
I who filled your Playstation with beer.
Why are you so bitchy when I gave you a Playstation?
Stay down here because it’s nice.”

Hello World

by on May.08, 2010, under Alcohol, Life, Technology

‘ello world ^^ So, how are you? I’m good. What’s the etiquette for these early posts? Whatever, I’m just gonna ramble for a bit.

So test time for me, yay…gotta revise sometimes, do mock lessons, all in preperation for the wonderful thing known as “Exams”. Guess what my first exam is? Statistics 1. May 27th. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay -,,,- No, I’m not looking forward to it.

Oh well, after tests I have a wonderful break though! Glastonbury. Yep, scored tickets (barely) and will be heading down there with two of my friends, Holly and Rianna. Unless I’ve pissed them off to the point they want to kill me by then (which is definitely possible knowing me).

In other news, I finished (pretty much) and handed in my Comp4 coursework. The programming itself was noway near finished, dear lord it wasn’t, but I was able to cleverly combine what was there, ingenious editing and the odd outright lie and should have enough to get a good grade.

Oh, I recently bought the Poets of the Fall album “Twilight Theatre“. It. Is. Amazing. But, then again, what else do you expect from The Poets of the Fall?

Erm, so……..more topics. Well, I have a new personal project I’ve started I’m calling “Project Pauper” for no real reason. When I actually have something almost noteworthy to show, I’ll actually be showing things.
