Quote of the Day
Pay what you want. If you bought these five games separately, it would cost around $50, but we’re letting you set the price!

All of the games work great on Mac, Windows, and Linux.

We don’t use DRM. When you buy these games, they are yours. Feel free to play them without an internet connection, back them up, and install them on all of your Macs and PCs freely. There is no time-limit on your downloads.

You can support charity. Choose exactly how your purchase is divided: Between the developers, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, or the Child’s Play Charity. Also, if you like this deal, a tip to the Humble Bundle itself would be much appreciated!”

Playstation 3 + Fail0verflow = ???

by on Jan.26, 2011, under Life, Programming, Technology, Video Games

If you haven’t seen this presentation yet…well, you call yourself a nerd? Okay, it is rather long (~45 minutes) but to anybody with an interest in consoles, homebrew, hacking, or general poking around inside machines, it’s a pretty interesting listen.

Whoever was behind the security system in the PS3 failed miserably, and failed hard, hence the title of that presentation “Console Hacking 2010: PS3 Epic Fail”. Heck, I could have solved that maths problem presented at the end, even if it was shown to me four years ago! That right there is GCSE level difficulty. Of course the rest of the lecture requires either the ability to smile and listen, or an in depth understanding of computer hardware, but it’s quite funny to see that kind of complexity broken down to something a 15 year old could solve. One can imagine the little monkeys in Sony running around in panic.

I do agree that the reason hackers haven’t hacked the PS3 yet is because they’ve not had reason to. Most hardcore hackers aren’t too interested in piracy, just the challenge, and Sony made the mistake of creating a challenge by pulling OtherOS.

Also of interesting reading is this article which details the possible repercussions of this epic fail.

Ironically, seeing this has actually made me want to get a PS3.

Damn you and Damn your Cuddly Lies!

by on Jun.10, 2010, under Technology, Video Games

Eversion is for sale on Steam for about £3.14 (10% off until 14th of June). It’s one of those Indie Games with a huge well-deserved rep, as it does what Indie Games do best: Takes a simple idea, perfects it and deconstructs it at the same time.

Essentially it’s Super Mario Bros written by H.P. Lovecraft. It looks and advertises itself as a Cute and Cuddly at first, and you do think “Oh great, a tacky Mario clone…”, then the real game begins. And Holy Shit, it begins.

I won’t spoil anything for y’all. Instead, I’m going to simply say you have to trust me on this one: There is a reason it comes with the warning “Not indicated for children or those of a nervous disposition”. If you have such a disposition I suggest you heed the warning.

We shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.

The hands...dear god, the hands...

Humble Indie Bundle

by on May.10, 2010, under Life, Technology, Video Games

One day and a bit left on the Humble Indie Bundle, I’m doing my bit for charity and recommended it to all who find this page. They explain the concept better than me:

The Humble Indie Bundle is a unique kind of bundle that we are trying out.

Pay what you want. If you bought these five games separately, it would cost around $80 but we’re letting you set the price!

All of the games work great on Mac, Windows, and Linux. We didn’t want to leave anyone out.

There is no middle-man. You can rest assured that 100% of your purchase goes directly to the developers and non-profits as you specify (minus credit card fees).

We don’t use DRM. When you buy these games, they are yours. Feel free to play them without an internet connection, back them up, and install them on all of your Macs and PCs freely.

Your contribution supports the amazing Child’s Play charity and Electronic Frontier Foundation. By default, the amount is split equally between the seven participants (including Child’s Play and EFF), but you can tweak the split any way you’d like.

And now, thanks to a humble donation from Amanita Design: all contributors are given a free copy of Samorost 2!

So yeah, go down there and get it, now. Do your part for charity and indie games at the same time. Why are you still reading?

Quote of the Day
“The world is gay. The world is stupid.
It’s me alone who you can trust in this whole tomb thing
I am your daddy guy.
I who spank you, whip you, flay you, beat you,
I who filled your Playstation with beer.
Why are you so bitchy when I gave you a Playstation?
Stay down here because it’s nice.”
